Chapter Seventeen

Dan possessed her with his mouth, scraping his teeth along Pepper’s lower lip, rasping the sensitive nerves. He slid his tongue around her mouth, then entered slowly, dragging out the anticipation and bringing her to her toes.

She wouldn’t fight; she wasn’t stupid enough for that. She was alone with a man barely brushed by civilized behavior. With very little encouragement, he would bop her on the head and drag her to his cave.

But she could refuse to reply to his enticement, and she did. She clutched the table with her fists, rejecting the urge to embrace him. She wasn’t afraid of confronting him, but she was afraid of him sexually. He wouldn’t hurt her, not physically, but he could wound her in the secret places of her soul, and she would be a fool to give in to him.

He drew back from her. “That’s right, darling. Resist. That makes your surrender all the sweeter.” Lifting her onto the table, he slid his hands up her thighs, opening the edges of her wraparound skirt. His callused palms chafed her smooth skin, and the intimacy made her breath rasp in her throat. He stroked her as if the sensation of her skin against his gave him pleasure.

She didn’t know what kind of satisfaction the contact gave him, she only knew he sapped her strength with his touch. Or... not her strength. Her good sense, because she wanted to plead that he go higher.

Dear Lord, she was a fool. For him.

His fingers slid up and down the seam of her panties at her crotch. “This is in my way.”

“Heaven forbid anything should ever be in your way.” Her attempt at sarcasm fell flat when he pulled out his pocket knife. With a flip of his thumb, the blade slid out, long and sharply gleaming. Before she had an inkling of his intention, the cool metal slid along her thigh, under her panties, and sliced them away. The spandex material curled up around her waist, then the knife slid up her belly and even the shreds fell to the table.

The shock of his action gave her an illicit thrill. A stupid thrill. “Are you crazy?” she demanded.

“Absolutely. We can definitely say I’m crazy.” The blade slid smoothly back into the handle and he pocketed the knife. A long breath lifted his chest as he stared at her.

Fear scuttled along her nerves. He was too big. Too fast. Too much of a bully. Too demanding.

And looking at him made her damp between the legs. Ever since she’d arrived, she had ached inside, suffering from a need strong and sharp in her womb, in the center of her being. Every minute of the day, he made her aware she was a woman who craved her man. Her denials availed her nothing in this game of desperate desire. Denials only made her want him more.

Now his finger slid along the crease between her thigh and the hair that protected her womanhood.

A damned ineffectual protection it proved, for she shuddered as the sensitive nerves tingled in reaction.
